Our New Scarves have now Arrived!

We’ve been creating original new designs for our next production of scarves for the past few months.  Production is complete and they are now available to order – just choose ‘Shop Scarves’ from the menu at the top of this page!

Original Print Designs

We had lots of ideas for new prints – with input from you, our customers.  Following the popularity of our wildlife themes we have created more insect designs – bees this time – and also some floral patterns.  We’ve also created a new ‘Inspirational Words’ design that will wrap you in comfort and strength whenever you wear it!  Working with our design and production partner, Moral Fibre Fabrics, we turned these ideas into unique print designs.

Creating the Scarves from Handwoven Cotton

Cotton for Where Does It Come From? scarves www.wheredoesitcomefrom.co.ukThe cotton for the scarves was purchased from the Gujarati cotton farms.  It was then sent to the Udyog Bharti co-operative in Gondal (where we visited last year!) to be hand spun and hand woven.  The fabric was then dyed by hand in vats – a very low water intensive process – according to the colour specification.

Printing the Scarves by Hand

Screen Printing Scarves for Where Does It Come From? www.wheredoesitcomefrom.co.ukIn May the fabric was hand printed using a screen printing process.  First the fabric is smoothed out over waxed tables (to remove the creases) and then the ink is carefully spread over specially created screens.  The screens have holes to allow the ink to reach the fabric in just the right places.  A screen is created for each colour in the design.

It is extremely hot in Gujarat at that time of year – up to 44 degrees – so we hugely appreciate the fact that our printers got up very early to do this work before the heat of the sun!  Hot sun and waxed tables are not a great combination…..

After our fabrics are printed they are finished and have their labels sewn on.

Throughout the whole production process Moral Fibre have  captured photos and interviews with the makers so that we can share the garment stories with you.  The scarves will all have a code on the label – you simply need to enter this code in our Trace Your Garment page to unlock the story behind your scarf!
